as i look to the sky from the surface of the water is the much awaited second album from grit, aka london producer gary brackley and it has found a perfect home on meanwhile. the label is well placed to be an outlet for grits explorations deep into the realm of deep techno, thanks to its standing within the techno community and this album stands tall alongside contributions from the likes of murmur, sven weismann, bvdub and conforce. opening with the expansive title track, grit sets the tone for what to expect with the ripple of syncopation shifting in and out of focus amidst the viscous layers of foggified luminescent ambient texture. across the subsequent five tracks this tone is retained throughout as brackley playfully explores the inventive sparks that arise when rhythm rubs with texture, with the smudged out subaqueous >safer retreat< a real highlight.

first up is tabou for the people by sofrito specials featuring l barrabas which twitch edited for his dj sets a couple of years back. the lovely people at sofrito kindly gave permission for it to be included on this release. its a relentlessly driving slab of 4/4 afro funk with horn explosions. next up is the 10th and final track in twitchs cumbia series. the first 8 were released on japans lets get lost label and the missing number 9 is being saved for a future release. colombias cumbia was born out of african influences. this track is based around a sample from colombian cumbia legend andres landero and is an attempt to fuse traditional cumbia sounds with up to date production styles. the end result is a slow motion hypnotic cumbia retaining the haunting melancholia inherent in the original sample. leading the aa side, twitch passed a wild highlife song by ghanas atakoru manu to glasgows super talented auntie flo (whose highly recommended future rhythm machine album recently saw a release) to play around with. auntie flo cut it up and added additional drums and bass to come up with this euphoric modern highlife groover

rosario born argentinean franco cinelli has been firmly rooted behind the decks since the tender age of 14. drawn by the call of the drums and having researched the creation of music through computers and samplers, the mid 90s saw cinellis first productions taking shape. rapidly becoming a key player on the argentine scene, franco played throughout the country, holding a residency at the prestigious el sotano. his first forays to europe came in 2003, but it was 2005 that his own music really made an impact. having released a handful of releases and mix compilations on smaller labels, it was his picaro ep with bruno pronsato that really brought him to the attention of the music world. since then, franco has gone on to release and remix for a number of established imprints including ilian tape, produkt, claque musique, hello repeat, airdrop , international freakshow, alphahouse and the label of his great friend kasper, esperanza. in 2011 following his critically acclaimed >planet dub< debut ep on bass culture records, franco cinelli finally achieved global recognition with his massive underground remix of cassius >sound of violence< that placed strongly in many of the end-of-year top 10 best remix of 2011 lists. today franco returns to bass culture records for a new take on his trademark deep & techy house with 4 original tracks on the >take me back< ep

on >work that shit party<, a fingers inc. style rhythm buttresses a two-note riff, a crackling male voice filtering in from the ether. a pinging keyboard zips around before that two-note flicker expands and contracts, warps and wheedles. but around halfway in, a female vocal refrain of >gonna work it out< breaks fat lacerations into pinholes, blaring keyboards seeping in through the gaps and crevices. then, as with >d117<, it is the congealing of all these disparate elements: a work it out from fischerspooners lizzy yoder sashaying with the two-note riff, the keyboards bouncing off the ceiling, and flaring hi-hats fraying the surface played by pat mahoney (lcd soundsystem). each portion is given its due, only to make the ensuing combination that much more enthralling.

thinking too much/where the helios is juk juks second release on nommos. thinking too much is the most direct juk juk release so far. its peak time fare, aimed squarely at the dancefloor. the dreamy intro will fool the unsuspecting, sucking them in and propelling them on a tripped out ride on a techno ghost train, buffered by a cushion of warm throbbing bass. where the helios is the real dream side. a floating, hallucinogenic, spaced out drift, driven by a crisp, pared back rhythm and a gorgeous, woozy vocal- led melody. juk juks first release for nommos was unwrap/fall and before that his debut, winter turn spring/frozen, was put out by kieran (four tet) hebden on his highly regarded text label. all juk juks output to date has been critically acclaimed, coverage including fact magazine, pitchfork, mix mag, abeano, the fader amongst others. his releases have also received significant club and radio plays including mainstream radio 1 support from admirers giles peterson and rob da bank, who has promised support for this release. four tet said the room went off when playing thinking too much at a recent event.

played and supported by norman nodge, samuli kemppi, inigo kennedy, samuel l session, colin dale, dvs1, developer, alan fitzpatrick, cassegrain, markus suckut, phil kieran, max_m and more. darkcell shows the new release on vinyl, just the third for his own label. his style is clearly defined. one track signed by the labels owner, and others two tracks signed myk derill (reform, knotweed, etc). darkcell transmitted in its track an atmosphere of modern techno. a slow techno rhythm, repetitive with something of psychedelic. a sort of brainwashing that will lead to total body hypnosis. the two tracks by myk derill are the same style. the first track (apply) is definitely very rough with a syncopated rhythm . the second (contemporary) is much more in the direction of dub-techno. only high quality in the fluxus records vinyl.

searle comes back to mowar for his second release. while his mind transfer ep was a darker workout, his new she moves ep show a deeper dubbed side of his productions. the title track perfectly combines the dub aesthetics and simple basic channel effectiveness with sweet infatuating stabs and scapes. this ones for the deeper and more sensual moments on the dancefloor. melancholy goes even deeper emotionally layering a steady slightly jacking rhythm with edgy melancholic atmospherics and melodies. on the flipside russ gabriel, who remixed on the very first mowar release back in 2008, reworks she moves in a stripped hypnotic mover, slightly more thumping for those sexy hips. last track tunneling is what searle would call a 5 am groover for the die-hards who want to be embraced by the sensuality of deep emotional techno.

march sees the formidable hypercolour deliver its most surprising output yet, an ep from none other than groove armada. tom findlay and andy cato need little introduction as groove armada. chart smashes, huge live tours and being part of the worldwide electronic music history aside, the duo have never lost touch with their acid house roots and have continued to be devoted to record buying, djing and the much maligned promo trawl. tom and andy have been avid followers of the label it seemed, since its inception. it was through label head jamie, meeting the guys back in 2010 at space in ibiza, and then continued communication via hypercolour promos, that led to an out-of-the-blue email requesting an informal hook up in east london and, within just a few days, a release was scheduled. that release is the >no knock ep<, four tracks that range from 808 fuelled old school cuts to low slung, moog-bassd electronic funk. each sound is lovingly crafted but there is an analog rawness throughout and every track has the sort of tweaked, off-kilter and occasionally awkward vibe that hypercolour do so well. it just takes a bit of imagination to guess what a ga release on hypercolour should sound but failing that, just check the release out as it wont disappoint.

loftsoul is the moniker of renowned dj uchikawa masahiko. he has been a dj for more than 25 years, and is deeply involved with the japanese nightclub scene since its early days. his borderless and genre-straddling playing style, from soul, jazz, dance classics, deep house, to techno tells of the impassioned music life of dj uchikawa masahiko. in addition to running regular parties at his club loft in nagano, (which has hosted djs such as joe claussell, jerome sydenham and glenn underground) and premier at loop, uchikawa has been recording tracks as loftsoul, and collaborating with pianist makoto kuriya as rhythm of elements. >soul inspiration< sees loftsouls continued collaboration with chicago house stalwart glenn underground alongside ricardo miranda aka the latin soul brothas. >soul inspiration< is a deliciously deep groove with trademark virtuoso piano for some esoteric soulful dance floor action. the b-side sees the latin soul brothas slow it down for them electronic soul of the moog mix. finally, dj uchikawa and hide koyama provide an essential dub.

coming not so far from the alps, opuswerk is a new talented artist in love with hardware equipment and already got some strong producing skills. the charismatic tall guy is a main actor in the renewal of the techno scene in geneva,throwing parties every week-end hes got a residency at milk club and will also open up for carl craig at electron festival yep opuswerk knows how to move a crowd. the a-side features futurewerk,the first of a collaboration with london based techno outfit fundamental interaction, is a raw dubby influenced track where chords and rhythm clearly aim for the dance-floor at 3am,or later depending on your countries going out habits. on the b-side,th13-13 is a flashback to the mid-90s,a squirting bassline with bleeps and blops,it plays subtly with a syncopated rhythm section and discrete chords. pure hardware jam!comes in 180 grams of black wax,carefully mastered at d&m,berlin. full printed sleeve designed by frederic laborde.

south london producer darren cunninghams new album, r.i.p, underlines actresss reputation as one of the most eloquent voices to emerge from the sub-bass nexus of london dance music. his intuitive and original grasp of beats, textures and rhythm puts him on a parallel path to dance music innovators such as drexciya, t++, aphex twin, autechre, burial and basic channel. absolutely essential release by one of the most exciting producers of the 21st century.

the next chapter in truesouls evolving story comes from marc antona. with discography highlights that include releases for mobilee, highgrade, micro-fibers and, most recently, his own dissonant label, antona is an already familiar name to followers of quality techhouse and the deeper, groovier side of techno. impressive career credentials that have been galvanized by marcs appearances for cadenza as part of their vagabundos tours. with such experience behind the ibiza-based producer, it comes as no surprise that this ep brings the kind of sunshine sensuality to truesoul that has come to characterize the soundtrack of dance musics mecca with the sultry percussion and understated funk of >gloves off< or the perpetual bass groove and twitching rhythm of >darwins corner stone<.

following releases on mathematics, boxfade and vuzkid, chris moss acid returns with an extraterrestrial four tracker on holland’s 030303. the a-side features bay of cadiz, an eleven minute cut built around an hypnotic bass line and a simple hitchcockian synth that would do well in a horror movie featuring zombies with smiley faces. on the flip, lynchette matravers is an energetic, crystal clear banger reminding of early 808 state. the big freeze sounds a lot warmer than the title suggests and should please anyone into afx’s later output. the rhythm, the fourth and last track on the ep, continues on that vibe with beautiful synth work. chris moss may look like a nutter, this sure is serious sonic pleasure

the magic of classic house music has always lain in the way it finds a soul in the machine, eking warm organic sounds from cold circuitry. and tracks dont come much warmer or more organic than >oranges<, a glorious eight-minute slow-burner thats the second single from wolverhampton producer mark es 2011 release stone breaker. >oranges< is a track that demonstrates how the simplest of ingredients — a quietly insistent four-to-the-floor rhythm, an understated bassline, synth pads that sound like the first intimations of a balearic sunrise — can combine to create something remarkable. anyone who has got the cd/digital release of stone breaker, of course, will know this already — but this release is the first chance to own this track on vinyl, as it was absent from the albums lp release. on the flipside is a remix of >oranges< by mark e himself: the appropriately-named space dub, a lindstrøm-esque reworking that transports the track from the dance floor to some distant orbit, drifting through space on a wash of lambent fuzz-toned synths. as different as they are, both tracks share a sense of both space and intimacy, a mellow charm that is evocative and inclusive. a soul in the machine.

a vanguard touch for a classic gold work on loose records by the label boss rino cerrone and flavio diaz, with an epic re-editing and two remixes by tom hades and jake childs. first one made a lot of releases for mb elektronics and rhythm converted, jake childs is famous for his success remix of blazes lovelee dae on om records. miseno is a mix of funky and old school techno melodies, with a strong kick and a warm bass line, the hi hat gives a sliding rhythm to the groove. the hypnotic synth is the essence of this track, very tasteful but very techno. extraordinary wiring makes a second step with jake childs, with a carrying tech - house beat and a funky bass line. everything is rhythmic and moved on by a minimal synth which runs on the track shaking the people on the dance floor. a tribal mood on a tech - house beat, the sub bass is pushed on by a powerful kick and the synth bass makes the track very strong. energetic tune and very good stuff for take a dance, just another last cigarette for tom hades too. a magic and innovative rework from loose records, the fusion of different styles enclosed in one release, enjoy

candy land is dj pi-ges first solo release from arpa records. it follows on from his previous collaboration with mathias kaden as unit mathi midori& pi-ge who released the konomama ep on raummusik the ep gained critical acclaim, especially for the inspiring remixes by reboot and maayan nidam. “candy land( original mix) - track one is a minimal track structured with profound bass, crunchy guitar samples and simple rhythm, peppered with minimalistic voice samples, it features a high impact breakdown. on the track 2 is a remix by christian burkhardt, one of the most remarkable producers at the moment and his tracks have been released various leading labels such as raum…musik, oslo, and cocoon to name a few. his remix fuses the characters of the original track with a unique new school rhythm and groove. on the 3rd track is deep and dark remix by dj sodeyama, label honcho of arpa records. this remix form an extended journey of over 10mins with a deep and dark introduction thats combined with experimental sounds as the track builds. all in all a great package for djs of deep house, tech house and techno.
